British Museum vs National Gallery: Bag Rules and Cloakrooms

Neither the British Museum nor the National Gallery is a suitable destination for your wheeled travel luggage. Their ordinary bag limits differ: British Museum visitor conditions give 40 × 40 × 50 cm and 8 kg limits, while the National Gallery gives 56 × 25 × 45 cm and excludes suitcases. Check exhibition restrictions and collect any deposited belongings before moving to the next museum.

Official British Museum and National Gallery pages checked October 8, 2026. British Museum text was confirmed directly in a browser, including its cloakroom information; recheck prices and timings before travel. These are separate venue policies, not rules for every London museum.

Compare bags and storage before booking the day

Entry restrictions and visitor storage are separate checks.

British Museum Visitor conditions exclude luggage larger than 40 × 40 × 50 cm or heavier than 8 kg. Wheeled cases are excluded regardless of size. Special exhibitions may impose more restrictions. Official visitor guidance lists bags up to 4 kg at £4 and bags in its 4–8 kg category at £6; Members are free. Opening hours: 10:00–17:00, until 20:30 Fridays. Capacity is limited; confirm the relevant charge before arrival. The visitor guidance says last deposits are one hour before cloakroom closing and collection is required 30 minutes before closing. Retrieve items before leaving the site.
National Gallery Building and cloakroom maximum: 56 × 25 × 45 cm. Wheeled luggage, cabin bags and suitcases are excluded. Backpacks and large bags cannot enter paid exhibitions. Level -1 Sainsbury Wing; £3 per bag or coat, free for Members. Published hours: 10:00–17:45 daily, until 20:45 Fridays. Staff can inspect or refuse items. Collect the same day before cloakroom closing. Check your exhibition's bag instructions on arrival.

Do not turn the British Museum's size and weight conditions into a single “large and heavy” test: the visitor conditions use separate grounds for exclusion. The National Gallery also prohibits the named luggage types even if their dimensions are below its maximum.

Building entry is not permission for every exhibition

The National Gallery's admissions policy includes cloakroom instructions and directs visitors to individual exhibitions for bag restrictions. Where a backpack may remain with a visitor, it says to carry it at the front or side. Ask staff what can stay with you rather than treating that instruction as an exception for a paid exhibition.

Large umbrellas can be deposited; the admissions policy says not to leave valuables or fragile objects in the cloakroom. Neither a listed service nor a payment is a promise that every object will be accepted or protected. Check the full prohibited-items list for camera accessories, sharp tools and other belongings separately from bag size.

Plan the transfer before depositing a bag

These museums are separate stops. Do not leave a coat or backpack at the first museum and assume you can collect it after the second closes. Build the collection time into your route before the next timed booking, dinner or onward train.

For an arrival or departure day, confirm external travel-luggage storage with your accommodation or a provider. Both museums identify station storage options in their guidance, but that does not reserve space. Check the provider's location, hours, size limits and collection deadline before travelling.

Four checks before leaving accommodation

  1. List the museums, specific exhibitions and required booking times.
  2. Resolve suitcase storage first. Weigh and measure any ordinary bag you intend to bring.
  3. Keep tickets, payment and necessary personal items accessible; ask which belongings can remain with you.
  4. Set a collection reminder and allow time to reclaim everything before leaving each site.

Compare a small bag without assuming admission

Norevix Crossbody Bag 2.0 lists empty external dimensions of 19 × 13.5 × 2 cm for Regular and 22 × 15 × 3 cm for Large. Those sizes are below the listed numerical dimensions, but do not establish packed size, capacity or permission to keep the bag in an exhibition.

Measure your actual essentials and compare the Regular and Large sizes. Use the London transport guide for the journey. If your trip continues to France, the Louvre and Orsay bag comparison requires separate checks.

Quick questions

Does paying for a cloakroom admit a suitcase? No. Entry bans and storage acceptance apply before the fee becomes relevant.

Can museum storage hold my luggage while I visit elsewhere? Do not assume so. Use it for the visit, confirm collection instructions and arrange separate storage for the wider day.
