For a London Tube, bus or rail day, choose a bag you can close after using your fare card, keep with you, and move clear of doors and other passengers. London's fare and boarding details make this a different check from a general city-trip packing list.
At the reader: make one item easy to reach
Transport for London says to use the same card or device to touch in and out on services that require both taps, and to keep contactless and Oyster cards separate at the reader to avoid card clash. Pick the card or device before reaching the gate. After tapping, put it back into a closed pocket rather than carrying several cards loose in your hand.
At the doors: control the strap and bag
TfL's travel-safety advice says to keep loose bags and clothing clear of train or bus doors, and to use handrails or poles on moving vehicles. A small bag helps only if its strap is adjusted so it does not trail or swing into another passenger. Try the bag over the jacket you will wear and check whether you can stand, sit and hold a pole without leaving it behind.
On the train: close and keep track of it
British Transport Police warns about phone snatches, unattended luggage and pickpocket distractions. Its advice is to zip valuables away after use and keep luggage with you where possible. This applies to a pocket or crossbody: neither is theft-proof. If you also carry a suitcase or backpack, plan where each item will be during transfers and stops.
Choose capacity for the actual day
Write down the phone or fare device, wallet, keys and any other item you need between stops. If you also have a laptop, lunch or heavy layers, compare a larger bag rather than assuming a slim crossbody replaces it. Norevix Crossbody Bag 2.0 lists external dimensions of 19 × 13.5 × 2 cm for Regular and 22 × 15 × 3 cm for Large. The item-measurement guide explains how to check actual fit; the daily-commute guide covers repeat trips.

If your route includes a museum
Transport rules do not override museum entry or cloakroom restrictions. Read the British Museum and National Gallery bag comparison before bringing a backpack or arrival-day luggage. Check the particular exhibition, arrange storage and allow time to reclaim belongings before travelling onward.
