Louvre vs Musée d'Orsay: Bag Rules, Suitcases and Cloakrooms

Dieser Ratgeber wurde noch nicht übersetzt. Lesen Sie die englische Version. Auf Englisch lesen

Do not assume that the same cabin suitcase is accepted at both museums. Louvre official pages use different wording about suitcases, while all exclude items larger than 55 × 35 × 20 cm. Musée d'Orsay lists cabin-size suitcases up to 56 × 45 × 25 cm among items that must be deposited in its cloakroom. These are different conditions. Do not assume a bag accepted for storage at one museum can accompany you through the other.

Official Louvre and Musée d'Orsay pages checked October 8, 2026. Recheck the linked guidance and your booking before visiting. Storage is for visitor belongings; this comparison does not promise available space or acceptance of every item.

Compare the rules for your actual bags

Separate size, luggage-type and storage decisions for the two museums.
Museum and official source Bag or luggage restriction Storage and charges Collection and transfer
Louvre museum rules Suitcases and large bags prohibited. Items exceeding 55 × 35 × 20 cm cannot enter the welcome area or exhibition rooms. Free lockers for smaller belongings. Umbrellas that do not fit in a bag must go in self-service umbrella stands. Collect locker contents the same day. An exit is final, so arrange collection before leaving.
Musée d'Orsay visitor services Large backpacks, motorcycle helmets, large umbrellas and cabin-size suitcases no larger than 56 × 45 × 25 cm must be stored. Free, self-service cloakroom for visitor belongings. A named cabin-size suitcase allowance is not permission for larger luggage. The checked services page does not specify a collection deadline. Confirm it with staff before depositing anything.

Preserve the museums' different figures: 55 × 35 × 20 cm is not 56 × 45 × 25 cm. Neither measurement describes guaranteed locker capacity for every bag. A numerical maximum also does not cancel a separate prohibition on a type of luggage.

Why Louvre suitcase advice needs a separate check

The current English museum-rules page prohibits suitcases and large bags. The visitor-amenities page instead advises against bringing them and describes lockers. Its French cloakroom FAQ, dated July 14, 2024, says luggage and suitcases cannot enter the collections and must be deposited, excluding items larger than 55 × 35 × 20 cm.

These statements do not establish a single clear permission for a smaller suitcase. Do not treat the numerical ceiling, an older PDF or an AI answer as guaranteed admission. Use the official suitcase FAQ and contact route to confirm your actual bag before travelling, or arrange external storage. The amenities page requires same-day collection and says the Porte des Lions closes at 3 p.m.; check your locker location before setting a collection time.

A cabin suitcase changes the route

If you visit Orsay before accommodation check-in, its stated cabin-size storage may be relevant. Confirm your suitcase and storage arrangement before relying on it. If your next stop is the Louvre, solve that suitcase's onward storage first; do not plan to take it into the Louvre because Orsay accepted it.

For a day involving both museums, external luggage storage may make the route simpler. Verify a provider's location, opening hours, accepted dimensions and collection deadline. A museum cloakroom should not be treated as a service that holds your bag while you spend the day elsewhere.

Keep essential items separate from deposited belongings

The Louvre says it is not responsible for valuables placed in its lockers. Its rules also require security checks. Decide where tickets, payment and necessary personal items will be before you reach an entrance or locker.

Orsay's visiting conditions advise keeping personal belongings attended and allow for delays from security checks. Camera tripods, supports and lighting equipment must be left in the cloakroom. The services page does not establish protection for every valuable item; ask staff about items you need to retain and about storage limitations.

Plan the transition between museums

  1. Confirm both bookings and identify where any suitcase will remain.
  2. Measure your packed bag, including pockets or parts that enlarge its shape.
  3. Before depositing belongings, ask about collection and keep essential items accessible.
  4. Reclaim all deposited items before the museum exit, allowing time for the next booking.
  5. Check your phone, ticket and payment before starting the walking or transport transfer.

The Louvre explicitly states that leaving is final. Do not plan a meal or transfer around an assumed return into the museum. At Orsay, confirm any return or collection arrangement that your itinerary depends on instead of transferring the Louvre's rule to it.

Would a slim crossbody cover the essentials?

Compare Norevix Crossbody Bag 2.0 only after listing your load. Regular has empty external dimensions of 19 × 13.5 × 2 cm; Large has 22 × 15 × 3 cm. Both are below the listed numerical dimensions. That does not confirm the packed bag's shape, interior capacity or admission to either museum.

Use the essentials measurement guide and Regular versus Large comparison. A phone-and-wallet load is different from water, a layer or camera equipment. The Paris Métro and RER guide covers transport access; if you also visit London, consult its separate museum bag rules.

Quick questions

Can a small suitcase enter the Louvre? Its current English visitor rules prohibit suitcases, while official amenities and French FAQ wording differs. Being within 55 × 35 × 20 cm does not resolve that conflict. Confirm the specific suitcase with the museum or arrange storage elsewhere.

Are both cloakrooms free? The checked pages list free Louvre lockers and a free Orsay cloakroom. This does not guarantee availability or permission to deposit any item.

Resolve the suitcase plan before visiting both museums

A suitcase accepted for storage at Orsay is not an exception to the Louvre ban. Confirm storage and collection for your route.
