Acropolis Museum Bag Policy: Backpacks, Cloakrooms and Security

Dieser Ratgeber wurde noch nicht übersetzt. Lesen Sie die englische Version. Auf Englisch lesen

The Acropolis Museum asks visitors to leave backpacks and other bulky items in its ground-floor cloakrooms, and bags go through an X-ray checkpoint at the entrance. Its official FAQ recommends avoiding large bags or backpacks. Plan what you need during the visit and arrange travel-luggage storage before arriving if your day depends on it.

Official museum guidance checked October 8, 2026. This guide concerns the Acropolis Museum in Athens, not the Acropolis archaeological site on the hill. Recheck the linked rules before visiting.

What does the museum say about bags?

Bag and cloakroom guidance in the Acropolis Museum's official FAQ.
Question Official guidance Packing decision
Where are the cloakrooms? Two on the ground floor: one for independent visitors and one for groups. Ask staff which cloakroom serves your visit.
What should be deposited? Visitors are requested to leave backpacks and other bulky items. Separate the essentials you may need before handing over a larger bag.
Are bags checked? An entrance checkpoint has an X-ray scanner. Leave time for screening and follow staff instructions.
What about valuables? The museum is not responsible for fragile or valuable objects left in the cloakroom. Decide how to handle those items before arrival.

Read the official Acropolis Museum FAQ for the current wording. It does not give a numerical small-bag exemption in the checked guidance. A compact bag still needs to follow the entrance process; do not assume wearing it creates an exception.

The museum is separate from the Acropolis site

The same FAQ states that the museum ticket is independent from the ticket for the Acropolis and associated archaeological sites. Separate tickets are one reason to check the two visits separately. The museum's cloakroom guidance does not establish what you can carry onto the hill or leave there.

If your day includes both, identify the order of your bookings and any point where you will need to collect stored belongings. Do not plan an onward visit around leaving your bag in the museum for an unconfirmed period. Ask the museum directly about collection arrangements that affect your route.

Do not rely on a cloakroom for an arrival-day suitcase

The checked FAQ describes cloakrooms for visitor belongings, but it does not confirm a suitcase-storage allowance, maximum accepted dimensions or an all-day luggage service. If you arrive before accommodation check-in or leave after check-out, confirm an arrangement with your accommodation or a separate storage provider.

Check the storage address, opening hours, accepted bag size and collection deadline. Arrange the museum visit around that confirmed service, rather than discovering at admission that your travel luggage cannot be handled as expected.

Pack in four steps

  1. Plan the full route: list the museum, any separate archaeological-site visit and your luggage-collection point.
  2. Separate belongings: identify tickets, phone, payment method and necessary personal items. Ask about any item that must stay with you.
  3. Prepare for checks: close your bag, keep the ticket accessible and allow time to follow the screening and cloakroom process.
  4. Before leaving: collect deposited belongings and check that you have every bag and essential item.

Compare a small essentials bag without assuming approval

If you are choosing a separate bag for essentials, Norevix Crossbody Bag 2.0 lists empty external dimensions of 19 × 13.5 × 2 cm for Regular and 22 × 15 × 3 cm for Large. Use these figures for size comparison only. They do not establish capacity, museum approval or permission to keep the bag in the galleries.

Measure your own essentials and compare the Regular and Large sizes before buying. For other museum visits, use the separate Amsterdam museum bag guide and Smithsonian bag and storage guide; their rules do not transfer to Athens.
