Smithsonian Bag Policy: Backpacks, Lockers and Museum Storage

Dieser Ratgeber wurde noch nicht übersetzt. Lesen Sie die englische Version. Auf Englisch lesen

Smithsonian bag rules and storage vary by museum. Bags undergo security screening. Natural History asks visitors to avoid large bags, backpacks and suitcases, and currently offers no coat check, bag storage or lockers. Check every museum on your route before you leave.

What should you do when a museum has no bag storage?

  1. Arrange storage before leaving. Ask your accommodation or a separate luggage-storage provider about your suitcase or large bag. Confirm the address, opening hours, accepted bag size, price and collection deadline; this is not a Smithsonian-provided service.
  2. Keep the day's essentials with you. Separate your tickets, identification and necessary belongings from the luggage you leave in storage.
  3. Collect museum-stored belongings before moving on. Smithsonian guidance says you cannot leave belongings at one museum while visiting another site. Do not use a museum locker as all-day luggage storage for a multi-stop route.

Checked October 10, 2026: Natural History's visitor page still lists no coat check, bag storage or lockers. The Smithsonian storage guidance says to collect stored belongings before visiting another site. Its general list also names Natural History as having storage, which conflicts with Natural History’s own current visitor page; plan using the museum-specific no-storage guidance unless the museum confirms otherwise. Confirm arrangements before your visit. A smaller bag does not guarantee entry.

Choose the bag for the belongings you will carry yourself

A small phone, payment and ticket kit: use the phone-and-passport bag checklist. Norevix's published empty exteriors are Regular 19 × 13.5 × 2 cm, about 170 g; Large 22 × 15 × 3 cm, about 190 g. Combined-item fit is not verified.

A bottle, lunch, layers or family supplies: plan enough usable space in a larger day bag. Check the food and water guidance for each museum.

Measure and test the complete load before choosing. A bag's outside dimensions or brand do not guarantee museum entry.

Open and save the Natural History rule checklist. The museum's no-storage guidance was rechecked October 11, 2026. Add your actual flight separately; this record does not cover the other museums in your route or live locker availability elsewhere.

Can you bring a backpack to Smithsonian museums?

The Smithsonian-wide guidance recommends bringing fewer belongings for faster screening. Natural History specifically asks visitors to avoid large bags, backpacks and suitcases. Do not treat that advice as one backpack rule for every Smithsonian museum, or assume that a smaller bag guarantees admission.

What is the Natural History museum bag policy?

Plan to keep your belongings with you: the National Museum of Natural History currently has no coat check, bag storage or lockers. Visitors undergo security screening and bags may be searched. Its Visitor Tips allow bottled water; bagged lunches must remain packed during the visit and be eaten outside. Arrange suitcase storage before arriving.

If your museum plan calls for a separate phone-and-ticket bag, compare Norevix's current specifications and Regular versus Large. Measure your complete load before buying; bag brand does not guarantee museum entry.

Which Smithsonian museums have lockers or bag storage?

Check the exact museum. Some offer limited lockers, but a listing does not guarantee an empty locker or space for your bag. Collect stored belongings before leaving that museum for another stop.

Museum-specific official guidance checked October 8, 2026, including official indexed guidance where a page could not be read directly. Recheck before visiting.
Museum Storage information and planning limit
Natural History No coat check, bag storage or lockers currently available.
American History Limited lockers, first come, first served. Locker doors are 8.5 inches wide; suitcases generally do not fit. No other bag-storage facility.
African American History and Culture Two locker sizes, first come, first served; the museum says they cannot accommodate suitcases.
Asian Art Official social narrative lists lockers and cubbies in the West Building. Confirm the current size and availability for your bag.
Postal Free lockers listed at approximately 10 × 16 × 24 inches. Size information does not guarantee availability.
Udvar-Hazy Center, Virginia Free lockers described for backpacks and carry-on luggage. This guidance applies to Virginia, not the DC Air and Space museum.
Hirshhorn Official pages differ: the Smithsonian-wide list mentions storage, while Hirshhorn's school-visit guidance says there are no lockers. Contact the museum before relying on storage.

Choose a bag for the belongings you will carry between stops

If you are considering a separate bag for your phone, wallet and tickets, view Norevix Crossbody Bag 2.0 and compare Regular versus Large. The listed empty exterior sizes are 19 × 13.5 × 2 cm and 22 × 15 × 3 cm, with approximate empty weights of 170 g and 190 g. Measure your complete load and check closure before choosing; those specifications do not establish internal capacity or museum acceptance.

For water, lunch, layers or family supplies, use a bag with enough usable space for the whole list. See the sightseeing load guide and family carry plan. Do not omit necessary belongings just to use a smaller bag.

Prepare for bag checks at museum entry

The Smithsonian's Entry and Guidelines page says bags can be hand-checked or X-rayed. Several museums, including Natural History, American History and Air and Space, require metal-detector screening. It encourages visitors to bring fewer belongings and bags. Knives, scissors, screwdrivers and pepper spray are among the prohibited items.

Empty your everyday bag before packing for the visit. Check both compartments and keyring attachments. Keep your packing simple enough to open a pocket when asked, then close it before moving on. Follow security staff instructions rather than trying to predict which objects must be removed from your bag.

A useful sequence is: arrive with tickets accessible, pause for the check, repack without blocking the entrance, then confirm that your phone and wallet are back in place. Repeat that sequence at the next museum instead of assuming an earlier check applies to the whole day's route.

Air and Space in DC: check food and passes separately

The National Air and Space Museum's DC What to Expect page asks visitors to reserve a free timed-entry pass, minimize bags and avoid outside food; bottled water is permitted. It also warns that entrance lines can form outdoors and confirms security screening at entry.

If this is one stop in a longer day, schedule food around that rule rather than packing lunch on the assumption that every museum accepts it. Prepare for waiting outside as well as walking between buildings. Keep the pass where the responsible adult can present it, without handing over the entire shared bag each time.

The DC location and the Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, are different stops. Read the guidance for the location on your ticket and travel plan.

A five-minute check before you leave

  1. List the exact museums, entry reservations and current opening information.
  2. Remove prohibited objects from the bag and attached accessories.
  3. Check food, water and storage guidance for every stop.
  4. Pack the full load, close the bag and try carrying it while walking and sitting.
  5. Set collection times and a meeting plan if your group separates.

For a load that includes bulky weather or family supplies, compare a larger bag before reducing essentials. Norevix's outside measurements do not establish internal capacity or museum acceptance. Use the sightseeing load guide, item measurement guide and family carry plan for the practical bag decision.

Sources and limits: The museum links above describe published policies, not live locker availability. Natural History visitor pages were read directly on October 8, 2026; some other checks used official indexed guidance. Air and Space DC food and pass guidance retains the October 5 check, with official indexed guidance reviewed October 8. No museum visit, security outcome or product packing trial is claimed.
