Amsterdam Museum Bag Policies: Rijksmuseum and Anne Frank House

Dieser Ratgeber wurde noch nicht übersetzt. Lesen Sie die englische Version. Auf Englisch lesen

The Rijksmuseum allows handbags up to A4 size; the Anne Frank House allows only bags smaller than an A4 sheet of paper inside. Neither museum's cloakroom is a substitute for storing your travel luggage elsewhere. If you are arriving with a suitcase or large backpack, arrange storage before your museum booking.

Official visitor pages checked October 8, 2026. These rules apply to the two named museums. Recheck their linked guidance before visiting and follow staff instructions.

Compare the two museums before packing

Bag access and cloakroom rules from each museum's official guidance.
Museum Bag carried inside Cloakroom and luggage
Rijksmuseum Only handbags, with a maximum size of A4. Free, supervised cloakroom for bags, umbrellas and daypacks or school backpacks. No facilities for large bags or travel luggage.
Anne Frank House Only bags smaller than an A4 sheet of paper. Cloakroom for a coat, bag or buggy; no room for large bags, large backpacks, suitcases or other large items.

The Rijksmuseum names a Lockerpoint at Museum Square as an external luggage option. The Anne Frank House directs visitors with luggage to their hotel or Amsterdam Central Station. Confirm availability, accepted sizes and collection times with the storage provider. A suggestion on a museum page is not a reservation.

What does an A4 bag limit mean?

An A4 sheet is 21 × 29.7 cm. The museums use slightly different wording: the Rijksmuseum gives A4 as its maximum, while the Anne Frank House says smaller than A4. Do not change both rules to “A4 or smaller.” Neither checked visitor page supplies a separate numerical depth allowance for this comparison.

Measure the closed, filled bag instead of using its empty dimensions alone. Pockets, contents and attachments can change its exterior. If you are unsure how a venue applies the paper-size comparison to your bag, ask that venue before relying on it for entry.

For a small essentials bag, compare Norevix Crossbody Bag 2.0: Regular lists empty external dimensions of 19 × 13.5 × 2 cm; Large lists 22 × 15 × 3 cm. Their empty front dimensions are smaller than an A4 sheet when oriented to its longer and shorter sides. This is a dimensional comparison, not a promise of admission or permission to keep a packed bag in the galleries.

Can you leave a backpack at the museum?

A daypack and a travel backpack are different packing problems. The Rijksmuseum explicitly describes cloakroom storage for daypacks and school backpacks, but excludes large bags and travel luggage. At the Anne Frank House, its official FAQ warns that arriving with large luggage may prevent your visit. Do not assume a bag accepted at the first museum can be stored at the second.

Separate the items you need during admission from anything you may leave in a cloakroom. Keep tickets, payment and necessary personal items accessible. Ask staff about any item that must stay with you; the size of your bag does not create an exception to other visitor rules.

Pack for your whole Amsterdam route

  1. List both bookings and your arrival and departure points.
  2. Arrange external storage for travel luggage, including a collection deadline.
  3. Pack the essentials you need between stops. Allocate separate capacity if you need water, layers or family supplies.
  4. Close and measure the filled bag, then check each museum's rule.
  5. Allow time to collect stored belongings before the next booking or onward train.

Use the Regular versus Large guide and measure your own essentials before choosing a size. Exterior measurements do not establish usable capacity. For the wider trip, use the Europe city-trip checklist. These museum rules do not establish the rules at other Amsterdam attractions.
