Is 500D nylon waterproof? Norevix Crossbody Bag 2.0 facts

500D nylon does not, by itself, mean a bag is waterproof. The number describes yarn linear density, not a water-protection rating. For Norevix Crossbody Bag 2.0, the published exterior is 500D nylon; the finished bag is not specified as waterproof. Choose by the complete bag specification, your carry load and the conditions in which you will use it.

What does 500D nylon mean?

The D stands for denier: grams per 9,000 metres of yarn. A 500-denier yarn therefore has a mass of 500 g per 9,000 m. CottonWorks explains this definition in its Textile Yarns guide, section 6.0.

Denier is a useful specification to record when comparing bags, but it is not the weight of the fabric per square metre or the weight of the finished bag. It also does not establish an abrasion rating, cut resistance or waterproof performance.

How to compare nylon bag specifications

  • Fibre and yarn: “nylon” names the material; “500D” gives the yarn's linear density. Neither is a finished-bag test result.
  • Fabric construction and finish: ask for the weave, coating or finish if these matter to your purchase. Norevix has not published a coating name or fabric weight in g/m² for this model.
  • Seams and closures: check whether a water-protection claim covers the complete bag, including these parts, rather than only a fabric sample.
  • Test scope: look for a method, result and stated conditions. A fabric-only rating would not establish the finished bag's performance.
  • Carry weight and size: compare actual empty weights and dimensions separately from denier. These help you choose the size you will carry.

A higher denier number alone is not a reason to call one complete bag more durable, more secure or more water-resistant than another.

500D versus 1000D: what should a buyer compare?

A 1000D yarn has twice the mass per equal length of a 500D yarn. That does not establish that a finished 1000D bag weighs twice as much or lasts twice as long. Compare the same fabric family and construction where possible, then record actual fabric weight, empty bag weight and relevant test results. Choose the bag that meets your load and wear requirements rather than the largest denier number.

CORDURA TrueLock offers plain and ripstop versions across 500D–1000D. That example shows why denier and construction should be separate fields. CORDURA is a branded fabric family; a 500D nylon label does not establish use of CORDURA fabric. No CORDURA certification or particular weave is published for Norevix Crossbody Bag 2.0.

Ripstop and zipper names need their own checks

Ripstop uses reinforcing yarns in a woven grid intended to resist tear propagation. TOM BIHN's materials guide describes specific nylon fabrics reinforced with UHMWPE grids. A grid is not a guarantee that every tear stops, and it does not establish cut resistance, abrasion life or waterproofing. Ask for the actual construction and relevant test; Norevix's weave is not published.

For zippers, ask for the series as well as the manufacturer. YKK's usage manual, section 3-1, identifies AquaGuard as water repellent, not waterproof or watertight. YKK separately describes AQUASEAL as a waterproof zipper. A named component still needs correct installation and a complete-bag claim. Norevix lists YKK zippers without a series or water rating; neither product family can be assumed.

For fibre, weave and finish together, use the nylon, polyester and canvas comparison; for definitions, go to the denier glossary entry.

Norevix Crossbody Bag 2.0: published size and weight

  • Regular: 19 × 13.5 × 2 cm (7.5 × 5.3 × 0.8 in); approximately 170 g empty.
  • Large: 22 × 15 × 3 cm (8.7 × 5.9 × 1.2 in); approximately 190 g empty.
  • Shoulder strap: adjustable from 75–135 cm (29.5–53.1 in).
  • Construction: 500D nylon exterior, YKK zippers, mesh back panel, RFID-blocking lining, an internal steel-cable reinforced shoulder strap and a hidden rear pocket.

The dimensions are external measurements, not internal clearance. Compare your phone with its case and the combined thickness of your wallet, keys and document holder using the Regular and Large fit guide. A tested item-by-item fit list and capacity in litres are not published.

YKK identifies the zipper hardware; no lockable zipper or rear-pocket locking mechanism is specified. The reinforcement is in the shoulder strap. Read the security-feature guide to compare those features with your travel needs.

Can I rely on it to keep a phone or passport dry?

The published specification does not establish that protection. No hydrostatic-head rating or finished-bag water test is published for Crossbody Bag 2.0, so this guide does not promise protection in light rain, heavy rain or submersion. If keeping an item dry is essential, choose protection with a documented rating and conditions appropriate to your use.

For a compact everyday carry setup, use the crossbody buying guide to decide whether a slim essentials bag suits your load, then compare Regular and Large on the product page.

Check the finished bag beyond the denier number

500D is a yarn specification. Review care instructions and finished-product evidence before relying on a water-resistance claim.
