On Royal Caribbean embarkation day, keep the documents you need to board and your medication with you, then choose enough carry-on space for anything you need before your checked luggage arrives. A small crossbody can be one part of that arrangement, but a change of clothes, swimwear or family supplies may require a separate, larger bag.
This guide covers Royal Caribbean's published guidance, checked 2026-09-30. Other cruise lines, your airport and individual ports can have different rules. Recheck the official pages and your booking before packing.
Plan for the gap before your cabin and luggage are ready
Royal Caribbean's luggage FAQ recommends personally carrying boarding documents and all medication. It also suggests a change of clothes and a bathing suit so guests need not wait for checked bags. The company notes that your stateroom may not be immediately available. Do not build your first-hour plan around being able to drop everything in the cabin.
Write down what you intend to do after boarding. Someone heading straight to lunch needs a different accessible load from someone planning to change for the pool. Choose the load first, then divide it into bags you can comfortably keep with you while walking, queuing and sitting.
Give each bag a specific job
| Job | Suggested contents | Packing check |
|---|---|---|
| Boarding access | The required original documents, boarding information, phone and a payment method. | Retrieve documents without unloading clothing; close the pocket after inspection. |
| Medication that stays with you | Your medication in the packaging recommended by Royal Caribbean. | Allocate enough space in luggage you personally carry, even if it cannot share the smallest bag. |
| Before checked-bag delivery | The clothing, swimwear and personal supplies you actually expect to use. | Pack the whole set together and rehearse carrying it through a queue. |
| Later in the voyage | Remaining clothing and items you can wait to access. | Check the prohibited-items list before closing checked luggage too. |
Royal Caribbean advises original, labeled prescription containers and at least three extra days of medication for unexpected itinerary changes. Follow its current medication packing guidance; confirm any special handling requirements with the cruise line before departure.
Check documents for your actual sailing
The official travel-document page separates requirements by departure region, sailing type and citizenship. Select the sections that match everyone in your party. Do not assume another passenger's accepted document combination applies to you, or that a phone photograph replaces a required original.
Make a list of each traveler's required documents and who holds them during check-in. Keep any original name-change or family documentation required by your booking accessible. Before handing luggage to a porter, check that the boarding documents are still in the bag you will keep.
Small bags still go through screening
Royal Caribbean says carry-on luggage must fit the port's X-ray machine; machine sizes vary. The FAQ does not supply one universal carry-on dimension for every port. If your bag is unusually large, confirm the arrangement with the company rather than substituting an airline limit.
The current prohibited-items page lists pepper spray, clothing irons and garment steamers among prohibited items. Sharp objects, tools and electrical accessories have detailed categories and exceptions: read those before packing a pocket tool or power strip. Screening staff retain discretion. A compact bag does not make a restricted item acceptable.
Rehearse before leaving home
- Lay out the required documents, medication and first-day load.
- Pack the items that stay with you, then close each bag without force.
- Practice retrieving documents and repacking them without leaving another bag unattended.
- Confirm that you can carry everything until your cabin becomes available.
- Recheck the official rules shortly before departure.
