Venice Bag Rules: St Mark's Basilica and Doge's Palace

Dieser Ratgeber wurde noch nicht übersetzt. Lesen Sie die englische Version. Auf Englisch lesen

St Mark's Basilica does not allow rucksacks or luggage larger than 40 × 30 × 20 cm, and trolley bags are prohibited regardless of size. Doge's Palace has different rules: suitcases, trolleys and bulky bags cannot enter; medium-size bags and backpacks must go in its cloakroom. Plan luggage storage before arriving at either attraction.

Official visitor guidance checked October 8, 2026. The two venues have separate admission rules. Recheck the linked pages and your booking before visiting.

Separate size and storage checks for a Venice museum-and-basilica day.
Venue Entry restriction Storage decision
St Mark's Basilica No rucksacks or luggage larger than 40 × 30 × 20 cm. No trolley bags under any circumstances. Arrange travel-luggage storage elsewhere. The checked ticket page does not establish a cloakroom service.
Doge's Palace No suitcases, trolleys or bulky bags whose three side measurements total more than 1 m. Medium-size bags, backpacks, umbrellas and objects judged unsuitable for the galleries must be left in the free cloakroom.

The Basilica's rule does not say that every backpack is prohibited. It sets a size restriction and separately prohibits trolley bags. Security staff can refuse noncompliant luggage. At Doge's Palace, being below the bulky-bag threshold does not mean a backpack can stay with you in the galleries.

Measure correctly: three limits versus a total

For the Basilica, compare the filled bag with the three stated measurements, 40 × 30 × 20 cm. For Doge's Palace, add its three side measurements when checking the 1 m bulky-bag threshold. These are different tests. Measure the bag after closing it normally, including any pockets that bulge once packed.

The Palace also gives staff discretion over objects unsuitable for the galleries. Do not treat either numerical comparison as an admission guarantee, and do not interpret a trolley ban as permission for a particularly small trolley.

If you want a separate small bag for essentials, compare Norevix Crossbody Bag 2.0. Regular lists empty external dimensions of 19 × 13.5 × 2 cm; Large lists 22 × 15 × 3 cm. Both empty sizes are below the Basilica's numerical limits, and their three sides total 34.5 cm and 40 cm respectively. These calculations do not establish the packed dimensions, capacity, or permission to carry either bag into a gallery.

Separate museum storage from travel-luggage storage

A cloakroom intended for belongings during a museum visit is not automatically an all-day left-luggage facility. Doge's Palace asks visitors to deposit bulky luggage elsewhere before coming to the museum. Confirm a separate provider's address, accepted sizes, opening hours and collection deadline before organizing your day around it.

Keep the ticket and any necessary personal items accessible before handing over a permitted bag. Ask the cloakroom staff which items should stay with you and when belongings must be collected. Do not assume storage at one attraction solves the next attraction's requirements.

Build a practical two-stop packing plan

  1. Check both bookings and arrange external storage for a suitcase or trolley.
  2. List what you need between visits, including weather protection and any personal essentials.
  3. Decide whether those items need a larger day bag that will be checked at the Palace.
  4. Pack, close and measure the bag. Review each venue's rules separately.
  5. Allow time to collect checked belongings and stored travel luggage before your next departure.

The Basilica's official ticket page also requires appropriate clothing with shoulders and knees covered. Plan clothing independently of bag size; do not assume a slim bag has room for an extra layer.

Use the Regular versus Large fit guide and measure your essentials before choosing a bag. For the wider trip, follow the Europe city-trip checklist. A bag accepted at these two venues is not automatically accepted at every Venice attraction.
