Paris Métro and RER: bag and phone checklist for visitors

For a Paris Métro or RER ride, keep the ticket or phone ready before the gate, close the bag after using it, and keep the bag with you through transfers and station exits. This checklist follows current RATP and UK government guidance. It is a travel routine, not a claim that any bag prevents theft.

Before entering the station

  1. Plan the route and select the ticket or travel card you will use. RATP's traveler guide says to validate the ticket or card as required and keep the ticket until you leave the station in case of inspection.
  2. Put the item used at the gate somewhere you can reach without emptying the whole bag. After validation, return it and close the pocket before you walk on.
  3. Keep a backup payment method and important documents separate from the item you use repeatedly. The UK government's France advice recommends separating passport, cards and other valuables.

On platforms, trains and transfers

RATP warns that pickpockets may be present on its network and reminds passengers to take bags with them when leaving a train. The France travel advice identifies the Paris Métro, RER and mainline stations as places where thieves operate. These are reasons to keep the bag closed and in view, especially when you are looking at a route map, boarding or changing trains. Carry it where you can control the opening without obstructing other passengers.

A small crossbody can be useful for ticket and phone access, but its name or a hidden pocket is not a substitute for closing it. If your day's load also includes bulky items, compare a larger bag and make a plan for both bags. The Europe city-trip guide covers that broader choice.

If something goes missing on the network

Tell RATP station staff and use the current lost-item or theft guidance. RATP describes a station-based complaint process for eligible tourists after certain nonviolent thefts on the Métro or RER; its conditions are specific, so check the live page rather than assuming every incident qualifies. For a missing card or U.S. passport, use the official-response checklist as well.

Checking a small bag for this route

Ask whether you can retrieve the ticket, close the zipper and move with the bag near your body while wearing your travel coat. The Norevix Crossbody Bag 2.0 publishes exterior dimensions of 19 × 13.5 × 2 cm (Regular) and 22 × 15 × 3 cm (Large). Those measurements do not prove interior fit or safety on the Métro. Measure your actual items and the usable opening before choosing.

Practice the gate-to-exit routine

Check that you can retrieve the fare item, put it away and close the bag. Select capacity for the rest of your Paris day as well.
